The '90s. Seattle-born grunge opened the decade with a turncoat up yours to '80s excess. Wall Street had taken a spectacular dive and the glittering lines of coke blew away into heroin chic. Gen X was disillusioned. These angst-ridden rockers reach back to punk, spun its rebellion into coffee house anthems and unwittingly made being unkempt a fashion statement. Ugly shoes. Dirty hair. Patchouli once again wafted through the music venues. It lasted only a short time, but the impression it made was indelible.
